75% Of Urinary Tract Infections Are Caused By One Thing

What causes UTI? Surprisingly, around 75% of simple infections are driven by a single type of bacteria: E. coli. In this video, I’ll explain the primary causes of UTI and how a bacteria that normally lives safely in your gut can reach the urinary tract to trigger painful symptoms.
As an Advanced Clinical Practitioner, I see many patients struggling with recurring infections because they aren't addressing the behavioral and anatomical factors that allow bacteria to thrive. Whether you want to know what causes urinary tract infection after intimacy or why your hydration habits matter, understanding these causes of urinary tract infection is the first step toward long-term relief.
We’ll break down why what causes uti in women is often linked to everything from bathroom habits to contraception choices, and I'll share the exact clinical advice I give my patients to flush the system and protect the bladder.
What you'll learn:
-The E. coli connection: How gut bacteria move to the urinary tract.
-Why "habitual delayed urination" is a major risk factor for recurring infections.
-The link between bowel health, constipation, and bladder pressure.
-Why your choice of contraception (like spermicide) might be the hidden culprit.
-How to tell the difference between a bacterial UTI and simple bladder irritation.

WHEN TO SEE YOUR DOCTOR ABOUT UTI:
If you think you have a urinary tract infection, you should see a pharmacist first if you’re a woman aged 16 to 64 and not pregnant, as they can often provide treatment, but you should contact a GP or use NHS 111 for urgent advice if symptoms are more serious or unusual—such as having a very high or low temperature, pain in your back or sides, blood in your urine, or if symptoms are getting worse or not improving within 48 hours; you should also seek medical advice if you’re pregnant, over 65, male, have diabetes, a weakened immune system, or keep getting UTIs, and call emergency services or go to A&E immediately if there are severe symptoms like confusion, drowsiness, or difficulty speaking, as this could indicate a more serious infection.
