WHEN TO SEE YOUR DOCTOR ABOUT SLEEP TROUBLE:
Insomnia is when you regularly have trouble sleeping, such as finding it hard to fall asleep, waking often during the night, or feeling tired and irritable during the day. Short-term insomnia lasts less than three months, while long-term insomnia lasts longer. It’s often caused by stress, anxiety, depression, poor sleep environments, caffeine, alcohol, or shift work. You should see a GP if sleep problems persist for months, lifestyle changes haven’t helped, or insomnia is affecting your daily life. Most cases improve by developing good sleep habits, like keeping a regular sleep schedule, relaxing before bed, and avoiding caffeine, alcohol, and screens before sleep. A pharmacist may suggest short-term sleep aids, but these are not a cure and can cause drowsiness. If insomnia continues, a GP may recommend cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) or refer you to a sleep clinic. Sleeping pills are only prescribed in severe cases and for short periods due to side effects and dependency risks.
