WHEN TO SEE A DOCTOR ABOUT A HEADACHE:
Most headaches are harmless and go away on their own, but you should see a GP if they keep coming back, get worse despite painkillers, or are accompanied by symptoms like nausea, sensitivity to light, or occur around your period. Seek urgent medical advice if you or your child has a severe headache with jaw pain, vision problems, numbness, weakness, or vomiting, or if your child’s headaches worsen, wake them at night, or are triggered by coughing or bending. Call 999 or go to A&E immediately if a headache comes on suddenly and is extremely painful, follows a head injury, causes confusion, speech or vision problems, drowsiness, or meningitis symptoms. Most headaches improve with rest, hydration, relaxation, and pain relief such as paracetamol or ibuprofen. Avoid alcohol, skipping meals, eye strain, or oversleeping, and consider keeping a headache diary to identify possible triggers like stress, dehydration, or poor posture.
