Learn about finasteride vs minoxidil and the best hair loss treatment, with finasteride or minoxidil compared and which hair loss treatment actually works!
When dealing with male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia), choosing between blocking hormone-driven hair thinning and stimulating active growth can make the difference between maintaining your hairline or continuing to lose density. As an Advanced Clinical Practitioner and Pharmacist, I break down the distinct medical mechanisms of both treatments.
What you'll learn
-How dihydrotestosterone (DHT) causes hair follicle miniaturisation in androgenetic alopecia.
-How finasteride blocks 5-alpha reductase to target the root cause of male pattern baldness.
-How 5% topical minoxidil stimulates hair follicle blood flow and extends the active growth phase.
-Why combined finasteride and minoxidil therapy outperforms single-agent monotherapy.
-The biological reason why starting treatment early is critical before hair follicles permanently die.
-Why hair loss treatments require continuous adherence to maintain regrown hair density.
-What causes the temporary initial hair shedding phase ("dread shed") when starting minoxidil.

WHEN TO SEE YOUR DOCTOR ABOUT HAIR LOSS:
Hair loss is common and usually not something to worry about, as people naturally lose around 50–100 hairs a day. Some types, like pattern baldness, are permanent and often run in families, while others are temporary and can be caused by factors such as stress, illness, weight loss or iron deficiency. In many cases, hair will grow back on its own, especially if it’s linked to a temporary issue or a medical condition that has been treated. Treatments like minoxidil (for men and women) and finasteride (for men only) may help slow or improve hair loss, but they do not work for everyone and only work while being used. Other options include wigs, steroid treatments, light therapy or hair transplants, though many are not available on the NHS. If hair loss is worrying or affecting your wellbeing, it’s a good idea to see a GP to identify the cause and discuss possible treatments, as well as access emotional support if needed.
