WHEN TO SEE YOUR DOCTOR ABOUT HAIR LOSS:
Hair loss is common and usually not something to worry about, as people naturally lose around 50–100 hairs a day. Some types, like pattern baldness, are permanent and often run in families, while others are temporary and can be caused by factors such as stress, illness, weight loss or iron deficiency. In many cases, hair will grow back on its own, especially if it’s linked to a temporary issue or a medical condition that has been treated. Treatments like minoxidil (for men and women) and finasteride (for men only) may help slow or improve hair loss, but they do not work for everyone and only work while being used. Other options include wigs, steroid treatments, light therapy or hair transplants, though many are not available on the NHS. If hair loss is worrying or affecting your wellbeing, it’s a good idea to see a GP to identify the cause and discuss possible treatments, as well as access emotional support if needed.
