CAUSES OF HAIR LOSS:

Hair loss is not usually anything to be worried about, but occasionally it can be a sign of a medical condition.

Some types of hair loss are permanent, like male and female pattern baldness. This type of hair loss usually runs in the family.

Other types of hair loss may be temporary. They can be caused by:

An illness

Stress

Cancer treatment

Weight loss

Iron deficiency

WHEN TO SEE YOUR DOCTOR ABOUT HAIR LOSS:

Hair loss is common and it’s normal to shed between 50 and 100 hairs a day, often without noticing. In most cases, it isn’t something to worry about, but sometimes it can be a sign of an underlying medical condition. Some forms of hair loss, such as male and female pattern baldness, are permanent and often run in families, while other types may be temporary and linked to factors like illness, stress, cancer treatment, weight loss, or iron deficiency. You should see a GP if you are concerned about your hair loss, especially if it is affecting your wellbeing. A doctor can usually identify the cause by examining your hair and discussing your health, which is recommended before considering commercial hair clinics. Most hair loss either improves on its own, grows back after recovery from a condition, or is simply a normal part of ageing. However, if the problem is causing distress, your GP can explain available treatments and support options.
